A HUMAN head has washed up on a beach in Florida, sparking a police investigation.
The grim discovery was made around 8:30 am on Tuesday by a worker who was raking Miami Beach.
He immediately called the Miami-Dade Police Department who confirmed that the head was human.
It is not yet known if the head belonged to a male or a female, Miami-Dade Police Detective Argemis Colome told
It is also not known how old the person is.
The stretch of beach where the body part washed up has been sectioned off with police tape amid an ongoing investigation.
Footage taken from the air after the shocking find shows that the head was covered with a blue tarp and marked out with traffic cones.
A police official told that the Medical Examiner will be working with detectives to find out who they are.
It is too early to say if the incident is related to any recent cases, including that of a teenager who went missing while swimming in the area on Saturday, a police spokesperson told the .
Local residents have been left horrified by the news.

"You see all kinds of things here but nothing like this, like we saw this morning. The head of a person," Bahman Amini told News.
"It makes us scared to go to the beach that we love."
"This is my typical route. Our neighborhood is very safe," another local told .
"We have our children here; our children play on these beaches and it's just beyond belief."
A woman who was walking on the beach at the time told the outlet that she was swiftly escorted away from the scene by a police officer.
"He signalled with his finger that I needed to turn around immediately," she said.
"I understood the assignment."
The local called the situation "quite disturbing."
The Miami-Dade Police Department has been contacted for an update.
It comes only after the body of a 31-year-old model was found floating near Key Biscayne at the end of September.
Adriana Vieria had drowned off Miami Beach while partying on a yacht and joining friends in the sea for a swim around 8:30 pm.
The swimmers realized something was wrong when they told her to go back to the boat due to jellyfish and she failed to appear.
Her body was found floating in the water and despite being rushed to hospital, she was pronounced dead at 9:30pm.
