The emergency services, including the Metropolitan Police, have received huge praise for their actions at Westminster when four people were killed after 52-year-old Khalid Masood , later shot dead by police, mowed down pedestrians long a pavement before stabbing a police officer to death in the grounds of Parliament.

Their actions prompted Hasnain to write a note to police saying: "Dear officers,

"Thank you for for keeping us safe!

"We appreciate it all."

Sgt Saltwell posted a picture of the note along with the caption: "I'm currently on the policing operation in @MPSWestminster. A member of the public has just given each of us one of these. #WeStandTogether."

A candlelit vigil was held in Trafalgar Square with thousands of people turning up to pay their respects to the victims.

Acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner Craig Mackey, who himself was caught up in the terror attack, started off the solemn proceedings.

He spoke of the three innocent people who were killed during the “truly terrible” incident, that many more were gravely injured and that “all of us have been deeply affected by what has happened”.

To gentle applause he said: “This cannot be undone, much as we would wish it. However we do get to choose our reaction and gathering here tonight shows exactly how we must move forward. We must stand together.

“People have tried to tear this city apart with acts of terror many times before. They have never succeeded and they never will.”
