A MAN has been arrested after a teenager died in a hit-and-run crash in Co Kildare overnight.

The fatal incident happened on the R403 in Blackwood near Robertstown in the early hours of this morning around 12.30am.

Gardai said the vehicle involved in the crash failed to remain at the scene.

The male was fatally injured as a result of the collision and his body was taken to the mortuary at Naas General Hospital.

The road was closed this morning and a forensic examination of the scene was carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

A garda spokesperson earlier said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run road traffic collision that occurred in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 10th November 2024 in Robertstown, County Kildare.

“The collision, which involved a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred on the R403 in Blackwood near Robertstown, County Kildare at approximately 12.30am.

“The vehicle involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene.

“The male pedestrian (16 years) was fatally injured as a result of the collision.

“His body has been removed from the scene to the mortuary at Naas General Hospital.

“The R403 in Blackwood is currently closed (between Graiges Cross and Dagwelds Cross) pending a forensic examination of the scene of Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.”

Gardai are asking any witness or road users with camera footage to make contact with them.

In an update, Gardai confirmed a man, aged in his 40s, has now been arrested.

Cops said: "Gardai have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred in Robertstown, Co. Kildare, in the early hours of Sunday, 10th November, 2024.

"The man is currently detained at a Garda station in Co. Kildare under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"A cordon is in place as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examine the scene and local traffic diversions remain in place."

Investigating Gardai continue are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

They added: "In addition, they are particularly appealing to those with camera footage, including dash-cam, from the Prosperous, Allenwood, Carbury, and Robertstown areas between 11:30 pm and 3:30 am on 10th November, to come forward."
