The hero officer was knifed with a "large machete" in the daylight attack when he tried to stop two men nicking someone's moped in Luton, Beds.
Emergency services scrambled to Luton Point in George Street around 1.10pm on Saturday.
The officer, from the Met Police, was savagely stabbed before the offenders fled on one of their own mopeds and the stolen one.
The brave cop was then rushed to hospital where he is still being treated for injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
Both suspects are described as being in their early 20s, say Bedfordshire Police.
