THE Democrats have gone into defense mode as they try to walk back Joe Biden’s shocking comment against Donald Trump supporters.

Biden was caught calling Trump fans “garbage” but his party has attempted to blame bad grammar for the surprising moment.

The president issued the scathing comment during a political call on Tuesday.

Biden referred to comedian at a New York City Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in which he called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”

In a video appearance with Hispanic get-out-the-vote effort Voto Latino, Biden said, "Well, let me tell you something … I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know… or Puerto Rico where I’m – in my home state of Delaware – they’re good, decent, honorable people."

Then he added, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been."

The Democrats have tried to sweep this under the rug by attempting to paint it as a grammatical mistake.

“The President referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as ‘garbage,’” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement.

His party has even been accused of editing the official transcript from the call by adding an apostrophe to the 81-year-old's words.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American,” the transcript wrote.

Biden then posted a follow-up on his poorly timed controversy, just one week before the election.

“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” he wrote in a X .

“His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say.

“The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation.”

Kamala Harris also addressed Biden’s contentious remarks as she boarded a flight to North Carolina today.

“He clarified his comments but let me be clear, I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” Harris said.

“I will be a president for all Americans whether you vote for me or not.

“That is my responsibility and that's the kind of work I've done my entire career and I take it very seriously.”

Donald Trump also addressed the huge campaign blunder with a surprise put-down on stage at a rally.

The Republican presidential nominee was joined by Florida Senator Marco Rubio who informed him and fans of Biden’s words.

“I wasn’t going to say anything, but I have breaking news for you, Mr. President, you may not have heard this,” Rubio said.

“Just moments ago, Joe Biden stated that our supporters are garbage.”

Trump then shared his shock response which called on his supporters to forgive the current president.

Firstly, he reminded his fans what Hillary Clinton said about them in 2016.

“Remember Hillary? She said deplorable, and then she said irredeemable right but she said deplorable, that didn’t work out,” Trump said.
