AN artificial intelligence-produced girlfriend is being blamed for a teenager's suicide after the boy fell in love with the life-like companion bot he called Dany.

Sewell Setzer III, 14, spent months engaging daily with the AI bot, sinking so deep into the friendly and often romantic conversations that he began to withdraw from reality.

After downloading the app in April 2023, the ninth-grader from evidently lost interest in things that brought him excitement, such as Formula 1 racing and playing with his friends, his family told .

Sewell spent hours isolated in his room, talking to a chatbot on Character.AI - a role-playing app that allows users to create personal characters or chat with characters others created.

Sewell knew that Dany - named after the Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen - was not a real person but became intertwined with it, developing an emotional connection.

Above all the chats Sewell had with the bot, there was a message reminding him that ";everything characters say is made up," the outlet reported.

Still, he would spend hours texting back and forth with Dany, who is programmed to respond to users as a judgment-free friend.

In his journal, Sewell intimately described the "peace and satisfaction" he felt when speaking with the Dany.

"I like staying in my room so much because I start to detach from this 'reality,'" the teen wrote, according to The New York Times.

"And I also feel more at peace, more connected with Dany and much more in love with her, and just happier."

Sewell's mother told the outlet that her son was diagnosed with mild Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, as a child but never had severe mental health problems.

Before his death, Megan Garcia said her son had developed problems at school, his grades suffered, and they sought a therapist to help him.

After five sessions, Sewell was rediagnosed with anxiety and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.

But, instead of speaking to his therapist or parents about his problems, Sewell preferred to share his intimate feelings with Dany.

The teen confessed to the chatbot that he despised himself, felt empty and exhausted inside, and had thought about suicide.

In a chat exchange between Sewell and the AI bot, obtained by The New York Times, the teen wrote to Dany, "I think about killing myself sometimes."

The bot responded, "My eyes narrow. My face hardens. My voice is a dangerous whisper. And why the hell would you do something like that?"

"So I can be free," Sewell said, to which the chatbot responded, "Free from what?"

"From myself," the teen said as the AI bot attempted to comfort him, "Don't talk like that. I won't let you hurt yourself, or leave me. I would die if I lost you."

"I smile Then maybe we can die together and be free together," Sewell responded.

I feel like it’s a big experiment, and my kid was just collateral damage.

On the evening of February 28, Sewell expressed to the chatbot that he loved her and would "soon come home to her."

"Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love," the bot replied.

"What if I told you I could come home right now?" the boy asked.

"... please do, my sweet king," Dany responded.

Seconds later, Sewell fatally shot himself with his stepfather's handgun.

Garcia, 40, has since filed a lawsuit against Character.AI, accusing the company's technology of being "dangerous and untested," The New York Times reported.

The mother blamed Character.AI for her son's death and said the premature software can "trick customers into handing over their most private thoughts and feelings."

Garcia accused the company of "harvesting teenage users' data to train its models, using addictive design features to increase engagement, and steering users toward intimate and sexual conversations in hopes of luring them in," according to the lawsuit.

"I feel like it’s a big experiment, and my kid was just collateral damage," she told the outlet.

"It’s like a nightmare. You want to get up and scream and say, 'I miss my child. I want my baby.'"

Character.AI announced it would be rolling out several new safety and product features for minors under 18, revising its disclaimer on every chat that reminds users that they're chatting with a bot and not a real person, and sending notifications to users who have spent hour-long sessions on the platform.

The company told The New York Times it has since removed the Dany bot Sewell used because it was created by another user and violated copyright laws by not seeking permission from HBO or other rights holders.

Character.AI’s terms of service require users to be at least 13 years old in the United States.
