Drivers were warned that roads were shut between junction 6, heading towards M25 junction 27, and junction 5, A1168 Chigwell Lane.

It was reported that the incident occurred on the northbound carriage, but traffic was stopped in both lanes.

A diversion was put in place by National Highways for commuters but drivers were strongly advised to avoid the area.

Those having to divert were told to follow the solid diamond diversion signs leading traffic through Woodford, Loughton, and Waltham Abbey to then rejoin the M11 via the M25

Drivers on the southbound carriage were advised to follow a solid circle diversion sign.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called just before 2.30pm with reports of a collision on the northbound M11, between junctions 5 and 6.

"An ambulance, ambulance officer vehicle and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

"An adult man was transported by road to The Royal London Hospital for treatment for a serious lower leg injury."
