Police considering charging as many as 20 Tory MPs over election spending after Thanet South MP Craig Makinlay questioned by cops for six hours

PROSECUTORS are considering charging as many as 20 Tory MPs over dodgy election spending, it dramatically emerged this evening.

The CPS has received files relating to multiple MPs from 11 police forces across England, and will decide if MPs will be hauled through the courts by the end of May.

The probes focus around the Tories controversial 2015 Battlebus campaign that saw party hands bussed around the country to campaign in key marginal seats.

It later emerged that the cost of these busses had not been included in a raft of MPs local election spending declarations.

And it in a further development Downing Street were plunged into centre of the police investigation into the Thanet South election as it it emerged three of the PM's most senior aides were secretly involved with the controversial campaign.

It came just 24 hours after the Sun revealed Thanet South MP Craig Mackinlay had been questioned by Kent Police for six hours last week over possible criminal overspending in his Thanet South campaign in 2015.

The row focuses on why hotel rooms for senior Tory officials were not included in Mr Mackinlay’s election spending.

He denies all the allegations.

Now it has been revealed the PM’s chief of staff Nick Timothy, her Political Secretary Stephen Parkinson and Chris Brannigan, Director of Government Relations at the Cabinet Office all stayed in hotel rooms block booked by the Conservative Party.

On Monday furious Conservative MPs confronted Theresa May over the Tory election expenses scandal at tense meeting on Monday, the Sun can reveal.

The angry face-to-face showdown came as the PM was attending a closed doors gathering of the executive of the powerful backbench 1922 Committee.

A senior Tory source told The Sun: “the anger felt in the party about how this is being handled was made very, very clear.”

They went on: “No10 are hoping this will all just go away, while MPs are left hanging.”

The police forces the CPS confirmed they had received files from are: Avon & Somerset, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Devon & Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Greater Manchester, Lincolnshire, Metropolitan, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire.

Staffordshire Police also confirmed that they had sent a file to the CPS.

Last night the Conservatives said: “We are cooperating with the ongoing investigations.”
