SHE'S ALL I'VE GOT LEFT

Student, 18, wants to become his little sister’s legal guardian after both parents die a year apart

Over £28,000 has been raised for Kyle Nester’s legal bid to win custody of his 15-year-old sister Madison who is still a high school pupil in Ohio, USA

AN ‘extremely bright’ student has applied to become his younger sister’s legal guardian after both their parents died in a 14-month period.

Kyle Nester, 18, attends high school with his 15-year-old sister Madison and has promised to make sure she finishes her education.

The siblings’ father Roy died on Christmas Eve in 2015 and lost their mother a little over a year later after she passed away following a short illness in February this year.

Their nearest relatives, their grandparents, live over two hours away from their home in Ohio, USA, and have been receiving lots of support from the local community.

Residents of their town – home to around 5,000 people and located just outside of Columbus – have set up different fundraising activities including the sale of “Team Nester” bracelets.

So far more than in winning custody of his sister.

Speaking to the ABC 6 news station, he said: “She’s all I’ve got left, so I have to do everything I can for her.”

He added: “I know it’s not going to be easy, but I know I have the whole community behind me. They say it takes a village to raise a kid.”

Kyle has already won a place at college to continue his education and currently plays on his high school’s American football team.

His coach Bryan Schoonover told  that the senior is strong and an “extremely bright student”.

He added: “There are very few people who would not only be able to deal with the loss of both parents and, at the same time, focus on keeping his family together.

“People have asked if I was shocked he was trying to gain custody of his sister and my answer since I first found this out was no.

“This is something he wants to do and never thought twice about.”
