'A PIECE OF HELL'

Corrie McKeague’s dad talks of heartbreak watching cops search landfill for his son’s body

Martin McKeague also said he felt no anger or blame towards the police, who earlier this week admitted a data mistake in the inquiry

The DAD of missing airman Corrie McKeague said today that visiting the landfill site where police are searching for his son's body was like staring into a "piece of hell."

Martin McKeague, 48, who visited the rubbish tip in Milton two days ago, also said he felt "no anger whatsoever" at Suffolk and Norfolk police , which was revealed earlier this week.

Mr McKeague said he believed the forces had done "everything in their power" to find his 23-year-old son, , Suffolk, six months ago.

Following he said today: "I think it was a very personal thing and I think we did have to take a couple of days to get over that emotion, but to actually see Suffolk and Norfolk police there raking through the rubbish it's a horrendous task, it really is and personally the thought of being there and that Corrie is underfoot really is like staring into a piece of hell."

But he said he felt no anger or blame towards the police, who earlier this week admitted a data mistake in the inquiry.

Initial data showed the weight of the waste collection from the horseshoe area on the night Corrie went missing was over 11kg, but .

Mr McKeague added: "I certainly feel no anger whatsoever, absolutely none. Blame, it's easy for people to blame, look for blame. They want to blame somebody.

"Unfortunately this looks like a mistaken data, so we are where we are today because of the hard work of Suffolk and Norfolk police and that is the only reason, because they kept going back and going back and going over this data.

"The Suffolk police and Nofolk police have done everything in their power to find what happened to my son."

He said that they, like everyone else, could only speculate about what had happened to Corrie, who went missing after a night out with friends on September 24, last year. He was last seen on CCTV going into an area of the town called the horseshoe.

Mr McKeague said: "I can only speculate it could possibly be some tragic accident that Corrie possibly could have gotten into the bin or something sinister might have happened that might have led him to be put in the bin. But like everyone else we can only speculate."

He said the last six months had been "a rollercoaster with a lot of lows".

He added: "From the moment that my wife told me, I was grieving from that moment and this has been the most horrendous time. It's been like a rollercoaster with a lot of lows, an awful lot of lows."

"But I'm beginning to focus and finding the strength in myself to see this out over the next few days, weeks, however long this is going to take, and the months ahead."

Earlier today Officers in white suits and breathing masks were spotted walking the rubbish site as they combed the area for the fourth day running.

The full-scale search is expected to take eight to 10 weeks and comes after preparatory work which involved

Detective Superintendent Katie Elliott said: "The search is likely to take six to ten weeks to complete, although this will obviously depend on daily progress on the site.

"We have a large area - around 920 square metres, up to a depth of eight metres - of waste to search through and a plan has been put in place to manage this process to ensure a thorough and comprehensive search is undertaken.

"Teams of specialist search trained police officers from both Suffolk and Norfolk will be carrying out the work to find anything that may be linked to the investigation.

"In planning the search we have taken into account not only the need to find Corrie, but also factors including the noise, odour and disruption implications for local residents and site workers, and the safety and welfare of the officers who will undertake the search.

"We know that physically searching the site has the potential to cause an increase in odour and we have taken steps to reduce this as much as possible.

"We hope residents will understand that we and the site owners have taken all these things into consideration when making a decision to go ahead with the search.

"However we also hope they will also understand why we are doing this as part of our ongoing enquiries to find Corrie. We need to find him and discover what happened to him.

"While the search may not provide the answers as to what happened it is something we need to do as our investigation continues."
