The 58-year-old is a pro-Ukraine activist and had travelled to the country in 2022 to support it as it fights off Vladimir Putin's invasion.

That year, he tweeted: "I AM WILLING TO FLY TO KRAKOW AND GO TO THE BORDER OF UKRAINE TO VOLUNTEER AND FIGHT AND DIE.”

Routh initially tried to join the International Legion but was “full of s*** and hot air”, an official from the group told the .

The construction worker became infamous among the legion for promising to raise “hundreds of recruits from Afghanistan and Syria".

But the soldiers never materialised.

The official said: “He’s been trying to get involved in recruitment and was really only interfering.

"He was called out a number of times by Legion people and told to stop his shenanigans, but that didn’t seem to stop him. He was mostly quite eccentric.

"I could smell a mile away that he was full of s***.”

In a statement to Reuters, the International Legion said it had no links to Routh.

"We would like to clarify that Ryan Wesley Routh has never been part of, associated with, or linked to the International Legion in any capacity.

"Any claims or suggestions indicating otherwise are entirely inaccurate."

Failing to get into the Legion, Routh turned to a wacky plot to try and raise troops from around the world.

The Syrian and Afghan soldiers were supposed to be special ops veterans from their respective wars.

Speaking to the , Routh said he wanted to fly hundreds to Ukraine from Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to join the fighting.

He told the newspaper he could achieve his goal by buying off corrupt officials, forging passports and doing whatever it took to get his Afghan cadre to Ukraine.

In another interview with , Routh had said he had travelled to Ukraine to fight, but it had not worked out due to his age and inexperience.

He said: "A lot of the other conflicts are grey but this conflict is definitely black and white. This is about good versus evil.

"If the governments will not send their official military, then we, civilians, have to pick up the torch and make this thing happen and we have gotten some wonderful people here but it is a small fraction of the number that should be here."

In Kyiv, Routh participated in rallies demanding China's leader Xi Jinping help with POW trades.

In an interview with last year, Routh was the reported to be the head of the International Volunteer Center

He said: "Ukraine is very often hard to work with. Many foreign soldiers leave after a week in Ukraine or must move from unit to unit to find a place they are respected and appreciated."

On X, he frantically tweeted at Zelensky with his ideas.

In one post, he said: “use Independence Park to create a tent city of all the foreigners here in support to get thousands more foreign civilians to come and support Ukraine.”

Zelensky today also sent his best wishes the ex-President as he recovers, saying he was glad to hear Trump was safe and unharmed.

The president said: "My best wishes to him and his family.

"It’s good that the suspect in the assassination attempt was apprehended quickly.

"This is our principle: the rule of law is paramount and political violence has no place anywhere in the world. We sincerely hope that everyone remains safe."

In June 2020, Routh appeared to say that he had voted for Trump in 2016.

But he since had withdrawn his support: “While you were my choice in 2016, I and the world hoped that president Trump would be different and better than the candidate, but we all were greatly disappointment and it seems you are getting worse and devolving.

“I will be glad when you gone.”

At the debate last week, Trump said he wanted to save lives and didn't give details on his peace plan.

He went on to raise how much it was costing the US to back Ukraine and slammed Joe Biden for not solving it.

Trump said: "Biden had no idea how to talk to him [Putin], he had no idea how to stop it and now you have millions of people dead and it's only getting worse and it could lead to World War III."

Harris lambasted him on betraying America's allies and trying to befriend tyrants.

She said: “Understand why the European allies and our NATO allies are so thankful that you are no longer president and that we understand the importance of the greatest military alliance the world has ever known, which is NATO."

Sir Keir Starmer said he was "very worried" about what he said looked like an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The Prime Minister said: "I was very worried by the news about this attempt. Looks like an assassination attempt, very worried about it."

He added: "Obviously, there's now an investigation going on so I won't say much more about the details, but I think it is really important that we're all very, very clear that violence has no part to play at all in any political process.

"So, deeply troubled. Let the investigation take its place. But absolute clarity: violence, no place in political discussion at all, anywhere."

Trump flees would-be shooter on golf course

On Sunday, the ex-US president, 78, was rushed to safety as Secret Service agents opened fire on a gunman brandishing an AK-47 in nearby bushes.

Trump was playing a round of golf when an advance agent spotted a barrel sticking out of a bush.

The would-be assassin - who managed to get within 400-500 yards of Trump - fled the scene in an SUV.

He was later caught by officials and taken into custody.

An AK-47 style rifle, backpacks and a GoPro camera were found discarded by the golf club.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Routh managed to get around 400 to 500 yards away from Trump.

He claimed that a Secret Service agent patrolling the course ahead of Mr Trump observed a gun barrel protruding from a perimeter fence.

"He immediately engaged that individual, at which time the individual took off," said Bradshaw.

Officials said it's unclear whether the suspect fired first - or at all - or whether just the Secret Service did.

The FBI released a statement two hours after the incident claiming the attack "appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump."

An eyewitness saw the suspect fleeing from the bushes in a black Nissan.

Trump declared on social media: “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE

“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me. Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again. May God bless you.”
