Union shame

UNIONS protesting about pensioners being robbed of their winter fuel allowance set a new high bar for shameless hypocrisy.

It is true that Labour’s political choice to impose a new austerity on OAPs is a grievous mistake.

But the public also knows full well what the Government is spending the savings on:

Bribing unions one by one not to strike.

At their Brighton conference the brothers affect outrage on pensioners’ behalf, in one case threatening yet another walkout.

But it is THEIR greedy pay demands which have created much of the supposed “black hole” Labour aims to fill by depriving ten million old folk of help towards their surging heating bills.

These militants will not be placated even by inflation-busting multi-year deals.

Aslef’s train drivers will now get nearly £70,000 for a four-day week — but as their chief Mick Whelan cheerfully admits: “We will never be content.”

Some unions want “full pay restoration” . . . mind-boggling rises to make amends for any wage erosion from the 2008 global crash, austerity, Covid and war.

Can their MPs, as they celebrated winning power in July, possibly have imagined themselves delivering such a cruel blow within weeks to millions scraping by on little more than a basic pension?

Britain voted for change. But that is not what the public had in mind.

Great Kate

WHAT fantastic news from Princess Kate.

She has finished chemo, is focused on staying cancer-free and is planning to return to light duties.

This has been a traumatic year which she and William have endured with enormous and admirable courage — and which has given her a “renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life”.

We’re overjoyed for them and the kids.

The nation is willing you on, Kate, towards a full and lasting recovery.

Middle muddle

ONE thing safe to say about middle-aged people is that they are not “triggered” by being called middle-aged if middle-aged is indisputably what they are.

Whose feelings, then, does York St John University think it is protecting by steering students away from using the term in its inclusive language guide?

Bristol Uni too is wringing its hands over labels which “reinforce negative stereotypes”.

These woke champions of Orwellian “newspeak” imagine a snowflake nation constantly taking offence over everyday terms no one actually bats an eyelid over.

What a waste of time and money. No offence.
