The 22-year-old claimed he was acting in self-defence and denied the charge of murder.

But Majid was convicted of murder at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

The court heard that he "feared violence" from Mr Khan, 26, because the victim had previously "threatened" him over the phone.

Mr Khan had also vandalised his car in the weeks leading up to the stabbing, jurors were told.

It came after Majid's ex-girlfriend had sparked a relationship with Mr Khan in September last year which caused "bad-blood" between the two men, the court heard.

On the evening of January 31, the defendant followed Mr Khan to the petrol station forecourt.

He then approached the car wearing a balaclava and hid what is believed to be a 12-inch blade, the court heard.

But Majid claimed he only intended to "scare" Mr Khan with the knife.

Jurors were told he "lost control" after his love rival hit him three times on his left wrist with a steering lock.

The court heard Majid inflicted up to 16 wounds in 13 seconds, some of which punctured internal organs, to Mr Khan's left arm, left leg, torso, and back.

Paramedics arrived at the scene but despite their best efforts Mr Khan was pronounced dead shortly after.

In Majid's prepared statement which was read to the court, he said that if Mr Khan had not "come for" him at the petrol station he "would have only scared him".

Police did not recover the weapon or balaclava when Majid was arrested.

Majid was found not guilty of possession of a bladed weapon.

Judge Steven Coupland told the defendant, who faces a mandatory life term: "You have been committed on count one and I will sentence you at a later date. You will be remanded in custody."

The defendant will be sentenced at a later date.
