Average council tax bill to hit £1.6K after the biggest increase in ten years

HOUSEHOLDERS can expect average council tax bills to hit almost £1,600 after the biggest increase in ten years.

Councils plan a four per cent rise across all eight bands from next month, a survey by public finance experts has revealed.

Smaller councils can raise bills by only 1.99 per cent but all those with responsibility for social care can put them up by a further three per cent to 4.99 per cent.

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) found 70 per cent plan to claim the maximum.

Sean Nolan of Cipfa said the average increase — which will put £60.94 on a Band D bill — follows six years of very low rises.

Until last year, the Government offered a council tax freeze grant to councils not raising theirs.

He said the grant’s removal showed a shift in policy and reflected the strains being caused by social care.

He said: “We can expect these levels of increase at least for next year.”

Cipfa polled all 420 English authorities, with 307 responding.
