On X, Clive Lewis shared an article from the Guardian about Israeli strikes in Gaza with the caption: "The link between the daily inhumanity being meted out to Palestinians and rising Islamophobia in the UK, are not unconnected.

"The inhumanity being shown to one is giving 'permission' for the other.

"These actions diminish us all."

Campaigners accused Mr Lewis of making a “highly irresponsible” comment at a time of heightened racial tensions and called for his immediate suspension.

Alex Hearn, co-director at Labour Against Antisemitism, said: "We call for his immediate suspension and for the whip to be removed while he is investigated.

"We believe that his comments in the context of sectarian violence and record attacks against British Jews warrant expulsion."

A Jewish Labour Movement source slammed Mr Lewis for failing to “engage his brain”.

They said: "This is so irresponsible.

“You can't blame British Muslims for the actions of Hamas, nor British Jews for the actions of the Israeli Government.

“When the far left talks about Zionists and neo-Nazis in the same breath, we expect Labour MPs to be clearer in calling this hate out, not leaning into it.

“Sadly - and not for the first time - Mr Lewis has tweeted before engaging his brain."
