Japanese employee Masaru Miura, 54, used a deadly 13cm blade to jab himself in the hip at a subway station bathroom in Nagoya.

He was travelling to work on a Wednesday morning in February when he slashed himself and ran to a nearby police box.

He reported that he had been attacked by a stranger.

But as he received treatment for the 2.5cm gash, police probed him before he admitted making his story up.

Miura said he was stressed and could not face going to work.

But while he did get the day off, he spent it in police custody on charges of obstructing police duties.

Officers quoted him saying: "I didn't want to go to work so I did it" and "If I got hurt I thought I would not have to go to work", reported.

Stress from overwork is a common problem in Japan, where the suicide rate is around 60 per cent higher than the global average.
