KFC workers were forced to chase a rat around a restaurant trying to catch it in a paper fastfood bag before one stood on it.
The large rodent was on the loose for up to 10 minutes as it scurried in between tables.
One member of staff at the fast-food joint in Reading put his foot on the lifeless animal then scooped it into a dustpan.
Witness Hasseb Lodhi, 18, said: "The rat came down from upstairs.
"It was running around for about 10 minutes, there were a lot of people in there.
"The guy who caught it could have dealt with it a bit better, obviously it was a bit brutal. But at the end of the day he had to what he had to do."
Another customer Abdul Khan, 20, filmed it on his mobile while eating with pals.
He said: “It was so shocking. The staff did not have the situation under control at all.
“It was in the restaurant area where people were sat around eating their food.
“Some people were laughing because of the way the staff were running around after it.
“There were two staff members trying to kick the rat and then in the end one ended up stamping on it in a KFC bag."
He added: “It was horrifying.
“He killed it with his foot and then tried to pick the dead rat up with a chicken box.
“Luckily for KFC there was only about ten people around when it all kicked off, so it wasn’t packed.
“It’s not something they would want their customers to see.
“It was really shocking considering it is a food establishment."
A KFC spokesperson said: “We were shocked to see this and would like to apologise to any customers that were in the restaurant at the time.
“As soon as we were made aware, we immediately closed the restaurant and brought specialists in to investigate.
“They found there is an issue in the surrounding area, so the restaurant will now remain closed until we ensure the problem is resolved and there’s no further risk posed.
“Incidents like this are extremely rare, and the restaurant itself was awarded a top rating of five stars on its most recent Environmental Health Office inspection."
