Young British couple seriously injured by hit-and-run driver as they waited for a bus in France

Reports claim the man and woman were left unconscious in the road with "multiple injuries" after French Alps collision

A HIT-AND-RUN driver left a young British couple critically injured in the French Alps after his car struck the pair while they waited for a bus.

Reports claim the Brits were left unconscious in the road last night in La Clusaz, Haute Savoie.

Cops have launched a manhunt for the driver after he fled the scene.

The man and woman, believed to be skiing tourists aged 30 and 25 , were taken to hospital in Annecy, where their conditions are described as "critical".

Commander Guy Lemenu of Annecy gendarmerie, told the : "It appears the motorist hit the pair at very high speed and drove off leaving them for dead.

"We can tell this as there is debris from the car up to 30 metres from the bus stop.

"They were clearly thrown high into the air and suffered multiple injuries and broken bones."

Local media reported that debris from the collision was strewn across the road, and that there were no witnesses to the incident.

The Telegraph also reported that the pair were discovered by a passing motorist who tried to give first aid.

A woman who works nearby in the Arvais Passion equestrian centre said that "many cars drive to fast" along the road.

A spokesman for the town hall in La Clusaz told website : "It's a very distressing incident, above all for the victims and their families but also for La Clusaz, which is very popular with British skiers."

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are in touch with local authorities after two British nationals were taken to hospital in La Clusaz, France.

"We are ready to provide support."
