A "CHEMICAL incident"; has left five injured - sparking an urgent evacuation with 60 firefighters scrambled.

Eight fire engines raced to reports of a "chemical incident" in the block at 12.35am this morning.

They remained on scene for five hours before letting residents return to their flats.

Ambulance crews and a Hazardous Area Response Team also scrambled to the scene.

Ten people were treated for respiratory problems and taken to hospital.

The London Fire Brigade said it is probing the cause of the "chemical incident";.

Crews scrambled to the scene from fire stations as far afield as Euston in north London and Bethnal Green in the East End.

Station Commander Graham Crow said:  "This was a protracted incident with crews remaining on scene for several hours.

"Motorists were advised to avoid the area due to a cordon put in place around the property."

The residential road closed after fire crews arrived but has now re-opened to traffic.
