Jay Slater missing updates – Body found in Tenerife confirmed as UK teen

THE BODY found in the search for Jay Slater has been identified as the missing teen.

The tragic news follows a four-week search for the apprentice bricklayer from Lancashire who vanished in Tenerife on the morning of June 17.

Jay's body was positively identified by his fingerprint on Tuesday.

    The Canary Islands Higher Court of Justice confirmed the dead Brit's identity through a fingerprint.

    A statement has been issued by Lancashire Constabulary, Jay's local police force, following the discovery of a body in Tenerife in the search for missing teenager Jay Slater.

    Overseas missing persons charity LBT Global, which has been supporting Jay’s family since the 19-year-old vanished in Tenerife four weeks ago, said the body was also found with the clothes and possessions the apprentice bricklayer had on him at the time.

    A spokesperson for the force said: “We have today been notified by the Guardia Civil that they have found the body of a man and that the indications are that this is Jay Slater.

    “While at this stage no formal identification has been carried out our thoughts are very much with Jay’s family at this time, and we continue to offer them our support.”

    A spokesman for the Civil Guard said today: “After 29 constant days of searching the lifeless body of the young man has been found in the Masca area.

    “The discovery has been possible thanks to the tireless and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard over these 29 days.

    “Everything is pointing to the body being that of the young British man who disappeared on June 17, pending full identification.

    “Initial inquiries are pointing to him having suffered an accident/fall in the area where he was found.”

    Jay Slater’s family reportedly feel online trolls have won after Spanish police called off their search for the teen.

    A family source from the UK said: “Jay’s family can’t help thinking the trolls have won and that they have got in the way.

    “So many people have been putting horrible messages out there which has only added to the family’s torment.”

  • Lack of volunteers ‘disappointing’, said distraught dad

    Speaking before a body was found, Jay Slater’s distraught father said it had been “disappointing” to see only six volunteers join the final search for the missing teen.

    Warren Slater said: “It’s a bit disappointing that there are no British apart from Paul but I suppose to them he’s just a British lad who’s come out here and got drunk."

  • Police say 'principal hypothesis for cause of death is accident'

    A Civil Guard spokesman has said the probable cause of death is "an accident".

    He told The Telegraph: “My colleagues have told me that it is very probable that this is the body of Jay Slater and the belongings and clothes found at the scene of the discovery of this body belong to him. 

    “But we have to wait for the autopsy to confirm this. It is likely to take place today or tomorrow."

    “The principal hypothesis for the cause of death is an accident. This person may have fallen from what is a very steep inaccessible area of the Masca park in Tenerife. This body was found by the Civil Guard mountain rescue team.”
