Schoolgirl ‘knifed in triple stabbing’ with man and woman arrested sparking huge emergency response

A man in his fifties also suffered stab wounds

COPS have arrested a man and woman on suspicion of attempted murder after a schoolgirl was 'knifed in a triple stabbing' this morning.

The horror unfolded in Whernside, Carlisle, at just after 8am as paramedics rushed to the scene.

Officers found a man in his 50s with stab wounds.

They also discovered a woman in her 50s and child with serious injuries.

Cumbria Police have now confirmed a 55-year-old man has been arrested and is in police custody.

A 53-year-old woman was also arrested and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A girl of primary school age remains in hospital in a stable condition.

It comes after an air ambulance transported the woman and girl to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle this morning.

One neighbour told the Cumberland News & Star: "This is so sad, I hope that everyone is OK."

Local Cathleen Orchard said: "Shocked, really shocked. I don't think anything like that has ever happened around here."

A Cumbria Police spokesperson said: "A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident on Whernside, Carlisle.

"Police received the report at 8:06am today to a male with stab wounds.

"Officer attended and also located a woman and child with stab wound injuries

"A 55-year-old man arrested is in police custody.

"A 53-year-old woman arrested remains in hospital in a stable condition.

"A girl of primary school age also injured remains in hospital in a stable condition.

"There continues to be no further risk to the public and they should expect to see a continue police presence in the area whilst officers carry out investigations.
