Other publicly-funded bodies including universities and charities have also had promotions appear on sites — without the advertisers knowing.

An Oxford Brookes ad was placed next to a story claiming Yoko Ono had an affair with Hillary Clinton.

The revelations in The Times follow its investigation that found leading brands were inadvertently funding terrorist videos on YouTube.

Google placed many of the adverts through its AdSense network.

The tech giant removed some extremist videos when it was made aware of them but continues to place adverts on other fake news sites and piracy forums.

The culture select committee will soon probe Google’s role in spreading fake news this year.

Chairman Damian Collins, said yesterday that advertising bosses would go before MPs and explain how “adverts are placed online on sites promoting extremism, violence or fake news”.
