The Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the nature of the investigation, but reported the suspect's computer was seized by cops and the suspect currently remains in Gibraltar.

The plane departed almost two hours after the incident and caused severe traffic delays.

A statement from the Ministry of Defence said: "We can confirm that an incident occurred at the airfield that necessitated an unscheduled closure of Winston Churchill Avenue in Gibraltar.

"As this incident has occurred as a result of an on-going police investigation we are unable to comment further at this time."

A source told : "What the offence is will come out. But the Ministry of Defence had better come out and say something.

"This will be too big for the MOD. It has caused huge delays of aircraft being able to fly. If the RGP stops an MOD aircraft from taking off it is something very big."

GBC reported the incident had sparked a diplomatic row after the RAF tried to remove them from the country.

Gibraltar cops are required to investigate any crimes committed within their jurisdiction.
