A1 accident: Tragedy as woman, 26, & man, 68, are killed in horror head-on car crash with two others rushed to hospital

TWO people have been killed in a horror head-on crash.

A woman, 23, and a 68-year-old man have tragically died in the smash involving a Citroen C3 Picasso and a Volkswagen Transporter.

The Citroen was travelling north on the A1 when it collided with the VW as it headed south, say cops.

The fatal accident happened near Haggerston, in Northumberland, around 3pm on Friday.

Police say their next of kin have both been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Another man and woman, who were travelling in the VW, were taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "An investigation has been launched into the full circumstances surrounding the collision.

"The road remained closed for several hours with diversions in place but has since been re-opened."
