FOREIGN Secretary David Cameron looks glum as he jetted back from an Italian weekend break in economy class.

The former PM, 57, took time out from the campaign trail to join his family for a trip to sun-soaked Rome – where temperatures hit 28 degrees.

Our exclusive footage shows the Tory big beast slumming it while jetting home in standard seats on an £86 Vueling flight.

Lord Cameron is thought to have left for Italy just days after his boss Rishi Sunak called a snap General Election for July 4 last Wednesday.

Sources said Cameron and his family, including wife Samantha, 53, were rushed through Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport on Monday afternoon.

The group then boarded a 6.30pm flight on a busy Airbus A320 to hop back to the UK.

The ex-premier was snapped in a middle seat wearing a smart green shirt, while holding two iPhones and reading his emails.

A passenger on the three-hour flight told The Sun: “There was a lot of commotion as he was being hurried through.

“Half the people on the flight were Italian, so not everybody knew who he was.

“I don’t know if coming back was short notice but you would have thought he would have got more expensive seats.”

When Cameron touched down in the UK he was rushed off the plane by three security guards before other passengers disembarked.

The passenger added: “As soon as we touched down he and Sam were gone.

“Meanwhile his kids and in-laws had to stick around with us to get through border control.”

On Tuesday Lord Cameron hit the campaign trail hard again, touring three constituencies and meeting four Tory candidates in a day.

But he is the second Tory minister to flee Blighty for warmer shores after Northern Ireland minister Steve Baker went to Greece on Monday.

Mr Baker defended his trip, claiming it was the only holiday he had promised his wife this year.

The Wycombe Tory added: “The Prime Minister told everyone we could go on holiday and then called a snap election.

“So I've chosen to do my campaign work in Greece."
