Forecasters predict 20 to 30mm of rain is likely, with some areas set to even see 50mm.

The yellow warning is in place between 10pm on Friday night and 10am on Saturday morning.

Frank Saunders, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “An area of heavy and quite persistent rain will develop across parts of north and northeast Scotland later on Friday evening.

"This will continue overnight before turning showery on Saturday morning.

“It is possible that 20-30mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely in around 12 hours, but there could even be up to 50 mm in a few areas.”

Those in the path of the rain should expect some flooding and that spray and flooding on roads will make journey times longer.

Elsewhere, the rest of the country is set to be cloudy with rain moving across form the English Channel up into the south of the country.

The southwest will see persistent rain later in the day while other areas around the country will see scattered showers.

That heavy rain in the southwest will then move towards central and eastern England.

The rain will then clear but leave behind an unsettled and cool weekend with a mix of sunshine and showers for the country.

A large weekend of sport is also set to go ahead with Wimbledon, the British GP at Silverstone, and England vs Switzerland in Dusseldorf.

Rain will hit SW19 on Friday with temperatures dropping from 19C this afternoon to 17C this evening.

The weekend will see overcast weather with chances of showers - temperatures will be 18C during the afternoon and 16C in the evening each day.

The F1 at Silverstone will have similar weather on Sunday for the race, with 16C, overcast conditions and a chance of rain hitting the Northamptonshire locale.

Meanwhile, the Three Lions in Germany are set to play in warmer weather.

Dusseldorf is forecast to be overcast and a balmy 20C at 5pm on Saturday.
