It comes after 19 people were killed and dozens injured after aerial and ground attacks.

Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said lack of aid from the West does not concern him.

He said: “If we must stand alone, if we must fight with only our fingernails, we shall.”

The death toll in Israel’s military operation in Gaza has now passed at least 35,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The UK’s foreign secretary, David Cameron, has said it would be wrong for Israel to carry out a major offensive in Rafah “without a plan to protect people”.

“For there to be a major offensive in Rafah, there would have to be an absolutely clear plan about how you save lives, how you move people out the way, how you make sure they’re fed, you make sure that they have medicine and shelter and everything.”

Lord Cameron also demanded today that the BBC do right by Britain and label Hamas a terrorist organisation.

It came after militants aired a new propaganda video yesterday showing dual-national British-Israeli hostage Nadav Popplewell alive before claiming he was dead.

On the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg program, Mr Cameron said: “I watched that video and you just think what callous people they are to do that, to play with the family's emotions in that way.

“And maybe it's a moment actually for the BBC to ask itself again, should we describe these people as terrorists? They are terrorists.”
