Brit tourist, 76, drowns while swimming on day trip to Greek island with his wife after being pulled from ocean by boat

The man was pulled out of the water but couldn't be saved in time

A BRITISH tourist has tragically drowned while swimming during a day trip on a Greek island with his wife.

The 76-year-old was visiting the island of Kalymnos when he went for a swim in the Almyres beach.

The pair had travelled to the island on a tourist boat from nearby Kos and were swimming near the port.

It remains unknown what caused the man's death.

The Brit was pulled out of the water and was taken by boat to the Vathi port.

Emergency services and Coast Guard rushed there to transport him to the Kalymnos General Hospital, according to local news .

Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.

The Kalymnos port authority has launched an investigation into the incident.

Kalymnos, a little-known island in the Mediterranean is part of the Dodecanese Island group.

It is a well-known destination among rock climbers thanks to its mountains, with an international climbing festival taking place every year.

It comes last month another British tourist drowned in Mauritius after going for a swim in "rough seas".

The 55-year-old is believed to have died on his first swim of the holiday.

And another Brit drowned while on holiday with his wife in Menorca.

Bystanders noticed him struggling and dashed into the water to help but he could not be saved.

Another Brit drowned after being carried away by strong currents while swimming off a beach in India.

The man, 72, at Talpona beach in Canacona, in the western state of Goa, in March.
