Anger after left-leaning Village magazine Donald Trump cover shows President in a gun’s sights captioned: ‘Why not’

The cover has been slammed as "moronic, tasteless and hypocritical"

A MAGAZINE has been slammed for its front cover showing the President of the United States Donald Trump in a gun's sight, with the caption: "Why not".

Village, a left-leaning monthly publication which dubs itself "Ireland's political and cultural magazine", revealed its provocative February issue on Twitter this afternoon.

The issue carries an article which reads: "So what is to be done? We have one of the worst men in the most powerful position, one where he can do damage to millions, to billions, to the planet."

It adds: "So perhaps the solution is tyrannicide. As he might say himself – 'take him out'.

"Tyrannicide has had support from various philosophers and theologians through the centuries, including the ancient Greeks and Romans."

However the article concludes that killing the US President would be wrong, "even in the case of Trump".

The piece ends: "Stick to democracy, rigorously but applied, as necessary, stealthily and aggressively."

However there has been a fierce backlash to the cover story.

Michael Smith, the editor of Village, told The Sun Online: "WHY NOT signals an explanation ‘why not’; not a question ‘why not?’.

"It’s not an incitement to anything. We’re politically correct, right-on, the last magazine that would recommend violence or killing anyone.

"Our cover is a provocation to think.

"Village is a) a magazine of ideas and b) aims to challenge. The methodology of the editorial which backs the cover and conclusion are clear."
