Jeremy Corbyn compares Theresa May to wartime PM Neville Chamberlain for ‘appeasing’ Donald Trump
The hapless Labour leader told MPs: "I hold in my hand a piece of paper" in reference to the former PM's peace agreement with Adolf Hitler in 1938
JEREMY Corbyn has compared Theresa May to wartime Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain for her appeasement of US President Donald Trump.
The hapless Labour leader told MPs: "I hold in my hand a piece of paper" in reference to the former PM's peace agreement with Adolf Hitler in 1938.
He told MPs that the Prime Minister's written response to him over his concerns about Mr Trump's policy contained no criticism of the US President's travel ban.
He said: "I also wrote to the Prime Minister on this issue and I received her reply this morning. I hold in my hand a piece of paper.
"She makes no mention of the refugee convention, nor condemns the US actions in this respect."
Former PM Mr Chamberlain infamously waved a piece of paper as he arrived back from talks with the Nazi leader in 1938.
He declared it was "peace in our time" but MPs said he was appeasing Hitler.
But the German dictator did not stick to the promises he made then and later said the agreement was just a "scrap of paper". War broke out less than a year later between the two countries.
Theresa May didn't comment on the reference at today's PMQs session.
The comparison comes after Labour MP Mike Gapes called the PM "Theresa the appeaser" in the Commons on Monday.
The MP was responding to an urgent question from Boris Johnson on what Donald Trump's travel ban meant for Brits.
Mr Corbyn also repeated comments that Mr Trump's request for a state visit be revoked.
This comes despite a new poll which says that most Brits want him to come on one.
The PM told the Labour leader that the UK would never implement such a ban. she said: "We wouldn't do it, in six years as home secretary I never introduced such a policy. We believe it is divisive and wrong."
