The eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said the rider worked for UberEATS - the meal delivery service which is owned by taxi app firm Uber.

He said the other man worked for private hire minicab firm Addison Lee.

He added that the Uber employee had stopped his moped by the side of the road in Aldgate East, London, before he started shouting at the cabbie.

The witness claims the Addison Lee driver then got out of his car while he was stopped in traffic and confronted him.

The witness said: "The two men were arguing and then the UberEATS driver shoved the other guy.

"The other man (the Addison Lee employee) then smacked the guy and kept hitting him until he hit the ground.

"The taxi driver's passenger climbed out and went to see if the UberEATS driver was OK, and so did another driver who wasn't involved.

"I had two people in my car and one of them wanted to see if the guy was OK but his Mrs (sic) stopped him."

An Addison Lee spokesperson said: "Addison Lee expects the highest levels of conduct from its drivers and is investigating the alleged incident."

Footage shows the aftermath of the altercation as a man who appears to be an Addison Lee employee is stood by the driver-side of his car with his door open.

He is then followed by his passenger as he gets back inside the people carrier.

The apparent UberEATS driver then gets up with his helmet in his hand and approaches the vehicle.

The eyewitness claims that after the footage had ended the rider started smashing his helmet onto the window of the car.

He said: "It was shocking really, the UberEATS guy looked stunned and shaken by what had happened.

"He must have smashed his helmet on the the other guy's window like three or times.

"It's lucky for him he didn't smash it."

Uber has been contacted for a comment.

Earlier this month an Uber driver was arrested after allegedly attacking a disabled cyclist.

Andy Murray's brother Jamie has told how an Uber once mistook him for the Wimbledon champ.
