He was also robbed of a £1,000 bracelet and a heavy gold belcher chain during the mugging, which happened between 5pm and 5.30pm on Saturday evening.

He had been heading back from the shops after picking up some cigarettes, two cans of beer and some sweets for his little boy Reuben, five, when the gang struck in Balby, near Doncaster, South Yorks.

Lawrence said: "I heard a couple of lads shout to me, 'Excuse me can we ask you a quick question?'.

"I thought nothing of it and said 'yeah that's fine' and then two lads linked arms with me and they carried me into the field.

"They then surrounded me in a circle. At first I thought I had been hit with a knuckleduster. They then started kicking me and punching me.

"I tried to protect my face but they kept stamping on my hands. I was screaming out for help and said, 'Stop it please, stop it'.

"They took my bracelet and chain and they went through my pockets for my house keys. They then walked off as if nothing had happened.

Lawrence, who worked as a removal man before a sciatic nerve temporarily stopped him working, managed to escape from the field and was found by his girlfriend's sister who helped him home.

He said: "I had only supposed to have been gone an hour so my partner, Kirsty, sent her sister, Claire, to look for me.

Lawrence's mum Diane Timms, 50 added: "He was at hospital until 2.30am this morning, he had stitches and a CT scan because they thought his skull was fractured. His body is bruised all over.

"It's left him very traumatised, and it's his birthday tomorrow.

"Mentally he is a mess. He's just been crying all day."

Lawrence added: "I'm too scared to leave the house at the moment. I feel like they are going to do it again and again if they see me.

"I'm scared to death in case they come back in the night.

"The whole thing has just been horrific."
