SAG awards turn into night-long protest against Donald Trump’s ‘Muslim ban’ as Hollywood ‘snowflakes’ declare war on President
HOLLYWOOD declared war on Donald Trump last night - just hours after the president put in place his controversial 'Muslim travel ban'.
Several silver screen stars took to the stage to voice their rage at Trump following his decision to halt immigration from several Muslim-majority nations.
And while many took to social media to voice their support for stars including Ashton Kutcher, other raged against the Hollywood ";snowflakes".
Star of hit Netflix show Stranger Things David Harbour launched the strongest attack of the evening as he stood before 16 other cast members.
But, apparently unaware her co-star was about to hijack the winners' speech, Winona Ryder pulled a series of confused faces.
Harbour roared: "I would just like to say that in light of all that’s going on in the world today, it’s difficult to celebrate the already celebrated Stranger Things.
"We are united in that we are all human beings and we are all together on this wonderful painful, horrible painful joyous exciting and mysterious ride that is being alive.
"We will as per Chief Jim Hopper punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak and the disenfranchised and the marginalised and we will do it all with soul with heart and with joy."
Host of the SAG Award Ashton Kutcher had earlier said: "Everyone at airports who belong in my America, you are a part of the fabric of who we are…we welcome you."
Kutcher defended his stance later on Twitter, writing: "If standing for the America that doesn't discriminate makes me a left wing actor who is out of touch. F*** it.
"As an American I respect my president but I do not respect this policy.
"I believe in protecting borders. I believe is enabling safety and security but we do so with honour. We are Americans."
Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus also hit out at the policy.
Her father fled to America from Nazi-occupied France during the Second World War.
She roared: "The immigrant ban is a blemish and it's un-American.
"We are grateful for them, we stand with them, and we will fight for them."
And House of Cards star and Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali added: "What I learned from working on is that we see what happens when you persecute people.
"My mother is an ordained minister, I'm a Muslim - she didn't do back-flips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 years ago.
"But I'll tell you now, we put things to the side, I was able to see her, she was able to see me. We love each other, the love is real, and that stuff in minutiae, it's not that important."
By contrast, Big Bang Theory star Simon Helberg and his wife Jocelyn Towne chose a silent protest.
Helberg carried a piece of card with the words "Refugees welcome" while Towne wrote "Let them in" on her chest.
The emotional outbursts left viewers divided.
One raged: "I am officially boycotting Hollywood. No movies or TV and no netflix for me. Hollywood's snowflakes need to STFU about politics."
While another, responding to comedian Sarah Silverman, added: "He is listening to "We The People".....Just NOT to the Hollywood snowflakes!"
Dozens have been detained at airports across America after the executive order was put in place while they were mid-air.
The nations included are Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Syria, Iran, Iraq and Somalia.
