Three ambulances attended the scene, near Bournemouth, Dorset, and paramedics carried out CPR on the road.

Despite their best efforts the man was pronounced dead shortly after they arrived.

An air ambulance that landed in a nearby recreation ground was not needed.

The young Renault Clio driver, who has not been arrested and is assisting the police with their investigations, was uninjured.

Sergeant Joe Pardy of Dorset Police, who was on the scene, said: "Officers were called to a two vehicle collision at 2.35pm yesterday.

"A Kawasaki motorcycle and a Renault Clio travelling in opposite directions were involved.

"Despite the best efforts of paramedics and officers the motorcyclist was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The man's next of kin have been informed and the coroner has been notified."

Victoria Road in Ferndown, where the collision occurred, was closed for more than five hours following the incident.

Officers photographed debris from the motorcycle, which was strewn across the carriageway.

Dorset Police urge anyone with information about the collision to contact them.
