AN OAP is to be hauled before judges charged with the attempted murder of a woman in a block of retirement flats.
Fred Butcher, 79, was arrested on Thursday morning after a woman, believed to be in her 50s, suffered multiple serious injuries.
She was airlifted to hospital while a team of emergency services, including forensics and more than a dozen police officers, scoured the crime scene.
Butcher, a retired electricity board linesman, was charged on Friday afternoon and will appear before judges today.
The woman, who was rushed to a London trauma unit from the scene in Maidstone, Kent, is understood to be in a stable condition.
A spokesperson for Kent Police said: "A 79-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following an incident at a private address in Marsham Street, Maidstone.
"We were called to the scene at 11.06am on Thursday 26 January 2017. A woman was found with multiple injuries and taken to a London hospital for treatment.
"Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
"Fred Butcher, of Marsham Street in Maidstone, was charged on the afternoon of Friday 27 January.
"He has been remanded in custody to appear before Maidstone Magistrates' Court on Saturday 28 January."
