THE Met Office has warned of thunderstorms this weekend - with temperatures set to drop in just days.

Heavy showers and thunder are forecast for the north west on Saturday.

The rain will spread across the UK next week, pushing the mercury back down to the April average.

But today will be mostly warm, dry and sunny across England, Wales and the north east of Scotland.

Temperatures are expected to hit 20C in London and the south east, 17C in Manchester and the north of England and 16C in Cardiff and Aberdeen.

It will be rather cloudy with some patchy rain in the north and the west.

Tonight coastal gales will blow rain, drizzle and low cloud across the north west.

A weak band of rain will push towards the south east tomorrow, clearing by dusk.

It should be a clear day in the south after patchy low clouds break up first thing.

Sunday will generally be bright, breezy and somewhat cooler than the past days.

The Met Office outlook for the weekend currently reads: "Largely dry on Saturday with hazy sunshine at times.

"Sunny spells and occasional showers on Sunday.

"Showers becoming more widespread and heavier on Monday, with temperatures returning to average. Breezy."

April showers in the north west will spread to all parts on Monday and temperatures will sink to the annual average.

The Environment Agency has issued 21 red flood warnings and 106 amber flood alerts across England.

Parts of Dorset and Wiltshire could be hit by groundwater floods over the weekend.

In Wales, amber flood alerts are in place for the River Dee and south Pembrokeshire.

England and Wales mostly dry with warm sunshine, but cloudier in the far west.

Feeling very warm in the sunshine, especially in the east.

Tonight

Further rain and drizzle in the northwest of the UK where winds pick up with some coastal gales.

Low cloud in the west which feeds inland. Clearer in the east.

Saturday

Patchy low cloud should clear quickly in the south.

A weak band of rain moves southeastwards, clearing by dusk.

Showers in the northwest, locally heavy with thunder. Turning cooler.

Sunday to Tuesday

Generally bright, breezy and cooler on Sunday.

Showers in the northwest, spreading to all parts on Monday.

A notably cooler feel as temperatures drop to average for April.
