A DOG’S poo forced a United Airlines flight to divert and land over 1,000 miles away from its intended destination.

The pooch had an accident on a flight from Houston, Texas to Seattle, Washington on Friday.

The aircraft was diverted to Dallas after the pet had an accident in the first-class aisle.

A Redditor who said they were on the plane said the smell and poo were the reason for the diversion and uploaded pictures of the mess and an attempted clean-up.

United Airlines confirmed to The U.S. Sun that the incident occurred.

The Redditor, , shared their story about what happened on the plane in a on the r/unitedairlines subreddit.

“Dog had messy accident in the aisle right in first class,” the Redditor wrote.

“Plane diverted to DFW. Ground crew spent over 2 hours cleaning carpets with paper towels.”

The passenger claimed that despite the clean up the smell had carried on to linger throughout the cabin.

“Smell made me ill. Gate agents kept yelling at passengers and the cabin crew,” they wrote. 

“The smell never quite went away.

“First class toilet declared unusable as the dog mess was apparently unresolved in there.”

The passenger also claimed that the time spent during the clean-up had an unexpected effect on the passenger’s meals.

“Food went bad while on the ground so very few snacks left,” they added.

Flight data from showed the plane left Houston at 4:16 pm and was in the air for just over one hour and 20 minutes before it landed in Dallas at 7:39 pm.

United Flight 422 was expected to last around four to five hours but was dramatically cut short.

The smell never quite went away.

This flight has not been the only one to make a surprise landing because of unexpected bowel movements.

A Delta flight made a U-turn as it had just departed because of a passenger's diarrhea.

The long-haul journey from Atalanta, Georgia to Barcelona, Spain had to turn back because of a “medical issue.”

Speaking to air traffic controllers, the pilot used strong words to describe the incident.

"This is a biohazard issue,” the pilot said

"We’ve had a passenger who’s had diarrhea all the way through the airplane, so they want us to come back to Atlanta."
