PM warns Keir Starmer would stamp out ‘green shoots’ of growth as economy turns corner

Mr Sunak stressed his 'long-term' ambition is to scrap the tax on wages altogether

RISHI Sunak has warned Sir Keir Starmer would stamp out the “green shoots” of growth as the economy turns a corner.

The Prime Minister outlined his “moral mission” to bring down taxes and put more money back into people’s pockets.

But he says Sir Keir will take the country back to “square one”, pointing to their promise to splurge £28billion on eco measures — which has now been scaled back.

Writing in today’s Sun on Sunday, the PM says: “Just as our plan is creating the economic bounce back this country needs, Keir Starmer wants to stamp out those green shoots with his anti-business wheeze that would destroy jobs and stifle prosperity.

“It goes to show, he doesn’t understand business, the beating heart of our economy, and he never will.”

Mr Sunak hailed a new 2p cut to National Insurance yesterday as the “best way to encourage work and drive growth”.

Combined with a cut previously announced in the autumn statement, it saves an average worker on £35,400 more than £900 a year, the Government says.

It will help around 27 million workers.

And Mr Sunak stressed his “long-term” ambition is to scrap the tax on wages altogether.

He adds: “Labour have confirmed they oppose ending the double tax on work which shows they will always prioritise taking your money over putting it back in your pocket.”

A Labour Party spokesman said: “Rishi Sunak insults people’s intelligence when he claims the economy is prospering when we can all see prices rising in the shops, taxes going up and a Tory mortgage penalty because they crashed the economy.

“Only Labour will make work pay, get people back into work and create good jobs across the country.”
