A suspected oxygen tank leak at a sewage plant has sparked an emergency response - with fire engines rushing to the scene.

Cops scrambled to a sewage plant in Plymouth at 9.35am this morning following reports of a leak.

Another locals said they saw a "mass gathering of fire trucks and police cars at the sewage plant".

A spokesperson said: "Police were called at 9.35am today to a property in Knowle Avenue, Plymouth following a report about concerns that a large tank was leaking oxygen.

"Officers assisted the fire service and local road closures were put in place while an assessment was carried out.

"Engineers attended to make the tank safe. The road closures were lifted at around 12.15pm."
