EUROPEAN Union leaders claim EU nationals living in the UK seeking residency are being "harassed" by the British government.

Sophie in ‘t Veld, a deputy leader of the parliamentary liberal group, told the she set up a group to examine cases where EU nationals have faced a “bureaucratic wall”.
The Netherlands MEP got involved after claims a Dutch national Monique Hawkins was told to leave after 24 years in the country.
She said: "People feel they are being harassed.
“Why is the British government trying to make it so hard for people who have been living in the UK for decades, who have set up a family there, work there? It is their home."

Home Office figures show there has been a 50 percent increase in the number of applicants from EU states seeking permanent residency since Brexit.
The Guardian reported that EU nationals have claimed in order to obtain permanent residency, they face an 85-page form requiring huge files of documents.

The PM told fellow European leaders last month she wants an early agreement on this issue after Brexit.
Last year it emerged up to 800,000 more EU nationals have been working in Britain than the totals picked up in official job figures.
