Joanne Smith, 45, and hubby Philip, 56, watched as contractors wrapped a piece of plastic round a damaged downpipe and secured it with a cable tie.

The botched job led to raw sewage seeping below their home in Greenlaw, Berwickshire.

Mum-of-three Joanne sent pics to Morrisons Utilities Services. A staff member replied with the cheeky emoji, adding: “Sorry for not answering the phone but I don’t work the weekends and I’m drinking.”

The pipe was broken when Scottish Power called in Morrisons to dig up the family’s driveway to resolve an electrical problem.

After their bungled patch effort, they relaid tarmac — which became saturated with waste.

It took a week before the repair was made good. Salesman Philip said: “Apart from having to sweep up poo, the worst part was trying to get them to come back out again.”

Morrisons apologised, saying: “We have clearly fallen short on this occasion.”
