The Abdul Ezedi case is a scandal that must never be allowed to happen again

IT IS vital that Britain’s secretive asylum system is opened up to proper scrutiny.

The public must be confident that monsters like Clapham chemical attacker Abdul Ezedi are not routinely slipping through the net.

It is shocking that the judge’s ruling on the convicted sex offender’s application was only released after the media made a legal application to see the documents.

The tribunal judgment would otherwise have remained sealed indefinitely.

The bungling that allowed Ezedi to stay in the UK — despite his conviction and clearly fraudulent claims to be a Christian — would never have been exposed.

Astonishingly, he was allowed to appeal not once but twice against Home Office decisions to refuse his asylum, only succeeding on his third attempt.

The proportion of appeals permitted has spiralled from 29 per cent in 2010 to 53 per cent in 2023, while the numbers of asylum applications being dealt with by these tribunals are also mushrooming.

So thousands more dodgy claims could have slipped through without proper scrutiny.

Home Secretary James Cleverly says we need to “shine a light” on these independent asylum tribunal decisions. Too right.

Justice must be seen to be done and secrecy must be stopped.

Our government must do everything it can to assist with security.

Millions are looking forward to what should be a brilliant football tournament.

But its success depends on the safety of fans and players.

Stick with Rishi

AT LAST, a poll which has a crumb of comfort for beleaguered Rishi Sunak.

It finds that 62 per cent of voters don’t think he should be ditched as Prime Minister before the election.

It is a small consolation given that a separate poll shows his party might win only 98 seats.

But at least voters realise that Tory plotters who try to dislodge him will only end up with one thing. An early election.
