Rich's "offensive" tweet was the type many would expect from Donald Trump - who is no stranger to a social media controversy himself.

Here we take a look at the life and career of Katie Rich, who has been suspended from her role on Saturday Night Live amid the row.

Why has Katie Rich been suspended from Saturday Night Live?

Following Donald Trump's inauguration as the 45th US President, Rich tweeted that his 10-year-old son Barron would become the country's "first homeschool shooter".

She quickly deleted the tweet and hid her account from public view after widespread criticism.

Rich later reactivated her account with the single tweet: "In sincerely apologise for the insensitive tweet.

"I deeply regret my actions & offensive words.

"It was inexcusable and I am sorry".

NBC who broadcast Saturday Night Live suspended her indefinitely.

Her name did not appear on the credits for the January 21 broadcast of the show.
