Brit holidaymakers face travel chaos as blanket of fog descends on England sending Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City schedule into turmoil
Met Office forecasters warn fog is set to blanket south of the country until at least 10.30am today
THOUSANDS of holidaymakers face travel chaos this morning as "dense freezing fog" forced airports to cancel flights.
London airports Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted warned of delays due to the weather and told Brits to check online before heading to the terminal.
Around 100 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow while London City cancelled 15.
Gatwick and Stansted are yet to suspend any flights but jet-setters have been warned to check before they travel.
Heathrow's website carried a messaged reading: "[We] advise passengers to check their flight status with their airline before coming to the airport.
"Heathrow's top priority is the safety of passengers and we apologise to those whose travel has been affected."
The Met Office meanwhile issued a yellow fog warning for much of southern England, all the way up to the east of the country, until 10.30am.
Forecaster Steven Keates said: "In this area we are likely to see some dense freezing fog patches developing, particularly through the early hours, which could impact some travel through the course of tomorrow's rush hour.
"There will be difficult driving conditions and delays at some airports - including the London airports.
"We ask everyone to be aware of the potential impact the fog will have on the roads.
"Take it steady, allow a bit of extra time for your journey.
"If you have got an early morning flight it might be worth double checking, just to make sure there are no delays at the airport."
