Hang together
IT was predictable that Tory MPs would panic over their dire poll ratings — but some have taken leave of their senses.
Blaming Rishi Sunak alone for his party’s woes is unfair.
The Tories have had 14 patchy years in power, including the double battering of Covid and war.
Unpopularity is inevitable.
But replacing the PM now would be calamitous.
Even if an obviously superior candidate existed, the idea they might save a few Tory seats is for the birds.

Voters would be horror-struck to have a fourth Tory Prime Minister installed in five years.
It would then mean an immediate General Election — at which the party would be punished for the chaos every bit as badly as polls already predict and more likely worse.
Their best hope, if there is any, is for the economy to radically improve and immigration figures to plummet in the next seven to nine months.
They must pray that Labour somehow falls apart.

Tory MPs have to rally behind Rishi. No one will vote for a party of disunity, plots and self-obsession.
Licence to lie
IF a news organisation is arrogant enough to set up a “Verify” department posing as the gold standard of fact-checking, it had better live up flawlessly to its billing.
Especially if it is funded by a compulsory tax.
Instead BBC Verify stands exposed as a sick joke — a perfect example of the corporation’s bias.
This absurdly self-regarding unit was supposedly formed of “forensic journalists . . . a highly specialised operation with a range of forensic investigative skills” in the “pursuit of truth”.
In reality they seem to be the same left-wing activists who infest all the corporation’s newsrooms.
Far from being “forensic” over Gaza they regurgitate whatever they are told by BBC Arabic reporters with a venomous anti-Israeli bias — and allegedly take the word of Palestinian activists who revel in Hamas atrocities.
The BBC’s reputation is already in tatters over its refusal to call Hamas “terrorists” and its credulity over the murderers’ anti-Semitic propaganda.

FOR years The Sun has warned against forcing homeowners to replace perfectly good gas boilers with heat pumps.
We said they were far too pricey.
That there was a grave risk they would not keep us as warm as gas in a harsh winter.
And that the public was not convinced we needed them.
A National Audit Office report reveals we were right on all counts.
