PROTEST VIOLENCE

‘Twenty people killed after police clash with pro-Trump protesters’ in Nigeria

Friday's demonstration was organised by a separatist group in southern Nigeria

TWENTY people have reportedly died after a demonstration in support of Donald Trump turned into clashes with police.

Friday's demonstration in Nigeria's southern Rivers state was organised by the Indigenous People of Biafra, a separatist group which wants Trump to support the creation of an independent Biafran state for the Igbo people.

Trump's statements on curbing Muslim immigration have been welcomed in southern Nigeria, where many complain of neglect from President Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim from the north.

George Ipob, one of the protest leaders, said: ";Unlike Obama, Trump is sensitive to people like us ... he being also leader of the greatest free Christian country."

Member Ugochukwu Chinweuba said Saturday that lawyers were working to locate and release those arrested by police. He added more than 200 people remained missing.

Nnamdi Omoni, a spokesman for Rivers state police, denied that anyone was killed but said 65 people had been arrested.

Omoni said: "Arrests have been made - about 53 persons and counting."

One million people died in the 1967-70 civil war over efforts to create a Biafran state.
