GIVEN the mind-boggling sums Britain has paid the French, we would expect them to stop virtually every small-boat migrant from setting sail.
Their police have found that beyond them.

But there will be absolutely no excuse if the Macron government now takes cops off the beaches at Calais to patrol Paris for the summer Olympics.
Of course the Games need a huge police presence.
But that cannot come at the expense of the gendarmes dedicated to smashing the cross-Channel people-smuggling gangs, for which UK taxpayers have paid £480million-plus.
For now the French assure us they can cover both.

Yesterday its MPs helped to thwart a new Tory Bill which would have barred male-bodied transwomen from women’s changing rooms or hospital wards and from competing in female sporting events.
The sane majority of the population knows that is the right thing to do.
Most transwomen are no threat to women, of course, but a few will be.
Why gift them access to these safe spaces?
Why should a transwoman who went through puberty as male use that muscular advantage to dominate women’s sports?
And why wouldn’t we protect confused young kids from being persuaded to change their sex using drugs?
This debate will split Labour.
Too many of its MPs are woke fantasists who believe men become women simply by self-identifying as such.
The fact the party was too cowardly to expose that rift in the Commons bodes ill for any future Labour Government.
