End of an era as Barack Obama leaves President Donald Trump’s inauguration in a helicopter… but ‘ordinary’ Joe Biden opts to take the train

The Obama family will now be flying off to California for a "much needed" break as the new President takes to the White House

Former-President Barack Obama and and wife Michelle left the White House for the last time by helicopter.

Following the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the US, the Obamas have officially jetted out of Washington.

White House Photographer Pete Souza later took to Instagram to post this picture of the ex-president saying goodbye to the White House

The couple were seen walking hand-in-hand towards a Marine helicopter after a "just presidents" photoshoot for Obama and Trump.

Trump, 70, and wife Melania escorted them to the steps, where he could be seen saying something in Obama's ear - which many have suggested looked like "I'll call you".

The Obama family headed to Andrews Air Force Base, where the former president gave a moving thank you speech to staff, telling them they had "proved the power of hope" by believing in him when he became the president back in 2008.

He said: "It wasn't blind optimism that drove you to do all this work, it wasn't naivety, it wasn't willful ignorance to all the challenges that America faces, it was hope, hope in the face of uncertainty.

The 74-year-old was seen leaving Capitol Hill in a motorcade, before heading back to his home state of Delaware by train.

The politician was joined by wife Jill and carried a bag over his shoulder as he boarded the Amtrak train back to Wilmington, where he will be greeted with a welcome-home ceremony.
