Horror as bus left wedged into wall after crashing into block of flats as five people rushed to hospital

FIVE people have been rushed to hospital after a bus crashed into a high-rise block of flats.

Shocking pictures from the scene show the blue McGill's bus wedged inside a wall following the crash in Paisley, Scotland earlier this afternoon.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called out to Hamilton Court on Calside at about 12.20pm.

The block has been cordoned off and several roads including Calside Avenue, Polsons Crescent, Craw Road and Alexandra Gate are closed.

Motorists have been advised to stay away from the area.

The cause of the crash is still unclear.

A witness said he was having lunch when he heard a loud bang.

Peter Campbell, who lives in the building, told the : "It’s pretty bad. There’re quite a few people injured. The medics are trying to evacuate the driver safely on a stretcher and put him into the back of an ambulance.

"He’s come down Craw Road, straight across, demolished all the fence and gone right into the building. It’s not looking good."

Another resident, who was at the scene when the crash happened, said he tried to get people out of the vehicle.

David Bannerman told : "We heard the crash, looked out the window and seen the barriers had been hit so went down to see what we could do to help.

"The people on the bus were all a bit dazed and confused so we just tried to calm them down. I think they'll all be ok in the end.

"We couldn't get the people off the bus because the doors were buckled but we made sure they were all sitting down until the emergency services got here."

Cops said five people have been injured and the investigation is still ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Five people have been taken to hospital for treatment and enquiries are ongoing.

"A number of road closures are in place including Calside Avenue, Polsons Crescent, Craw Road and Alexandra Gate. Drivers are asked to avoid the area."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed three people had been taken to the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital while two were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

They said: "We received a call at 12:25 to attend an incident in Calside, Paisley. A range of resources including ambulances, special operations response teams, a trauma team and a critical care paramedic were dispatched to the scene."

A spokesperson for McGill’s Buses said: "This is a live incident and McGill’s personnel are in attendance to establish the detail of the crash. We cannot comment further at this stage."
