Donald trump finally writes back to Theresa May – but billionaire fails to return the favour with a gift for the PM
DONALD Trump has finally written back to Theresa May - but the US President-elect failed to return the favour by not sending the Prime Minister a gift.
She had sent him a copy of a landmark wartime address given by Winston Churchill stressing the need for close Anglo-American relations, in an attempt to repair the so-called ‘Special relationship’.
Downing Street confirmed they had received a letter from the real estate mogul, but would not go into the details.
However they said part of it referred to the gift of the Churchill speech sent shortly after Christmas.
Mr Churchill's address was made following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, and in it the war-time prime minister expressed his hope that the British and American people would "walk together in majesty, in justice and in peace".
In a letter sent with the address, Mrs May said she hoped the feeling of "unity and fraternal association" between the two countries was "as true today as it has ever been".
Mrs May's spokesman told a regular Westminster briefing: "The Prime Minister has spoken a couple of times to the president-elect, and has written to the president-elect, has received a letter from the president-elect, and will be meeting him shortly.
"They have had conversations and will continue to do so."
Downing Street had previously said that Mr Trump appeared "delighted" with the Churchill gift.
The news comes just hours before the 70-year-old was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.
